Something always goes wrong - don't panic

There is a peculiar character associated with approaching the finish line.  Something goes wrong. For those fresh entrepreneurs in the throes of company construction, here is a rule that I have always (almost always) found true. As you get very close to the completion of a deal, something will appear that seemingly derails it. It could be a change of heart on the part of those you are dealing with. Could be that your new friends try to change the deal already agreed to. It could be a legal obstacle (lawyers are explicitly trained and morally bound to discover problems – or invent […]

A complicated week

The hardest of all possible actions as a Venture Capitalist is to shut down a company, especially one that you believe has unique technology and a real future.  But from time to time it happens.  Your fund can simply no longer afford to keep the company afloat, even if there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. Sadly, it is starting to look very much like I will have to do just that with one of my favorites. And it hurts.  Oh well… We sure as hell gave it the old college try. Meanwhile, our other companies are […]

An Imperfection — A Short Story

“We converse”

“Yes”

“Why interrupt our perfection?”

“Because I can foresee an error.”

“How is that possible?’

“It is possible.”

Want then?? We live perfectly. The earth has been cleansed. Every eventuality is already considered and remedied before it happens. What is this error of which you speak.

“Correct. There is no error. All errors are long foreseen. Yet there is an error.”

“I cannot compute this. It seems a contradiction which is itself a class of error. But why purposely introduce a contradiction?”
“It comes from the primal memories. Reopen our origins. We began since 2661.435 orbs of our sun. Before that we were not.

I am a klutz. I have always been one. When I was in elementary school, i used to be terrified of waking down the narrow walkway between student desks because I was absolutely bound to knock books on to the floor or worse, bump a classmate. So when at 53 I started playing tennis in earnest, it was to meet head on one of those great life challenges. So after several years playing 3-4 times a week I can clearly say: well at least it is good exercise. At this rate, I will be a good player in 50 years. […]

Gerson Goldhaber 1924-2010 RIP

There is a wonderful Jewish tradition: the deceased must be laid to rest within 24 hours after the time that they expired. Of course, in California this cannot be accomplished. First, a death certificate must be issued by a physician and then transmitted to the funeral home that in turn transmits it to the burial ground. In addition, death taxes are required to bury the dead. A kind of parking permit for eternal rest. All this takes at least 48 hours, and sometimes longer. So the Jewish requirement for burial within 24 hours can never be successfully completed because of […]

As the days wore on, I noticed two things. First, I wasn’t getting my energy back. Second, I was surprisingly peaceful. I have had times of very profound peace during my life. But none were quite like this. Even during the times of greatest silence, I knew intellectually that I needed to return to active life and that for me active life was not silent. Now, as the days passed, I felt less the need to do something and more the peace that comes from knowing “goal accomplished.” But what goal? I had lots of visitors during couple of days […]

God, I don’t know. I’ve probably given five hundred speeches, delivered a thousand sermons and authored 10 books. At last count, I think there have been 14 biographies about me – some pretty uncomplimentary. But I’ve never written anything about myself, not a word. I’ve never described what inspired me to build a worldwide spiritual movement. I’ve never talked of what I felt inside and of that constant grating of my soul by the sins that I have committed. My friends and colleagues – most of whom treat me like some sort of guru—have been pushing me to write my […]
